Pesky Flies Getting Everywhere?

There are many products that you can buy or make yourself as a fly spray for your equine (now and then, maybe a squirt for yourself). Fly spray is meant to repel those pesky flies away but it needs to be used periodically to connect with the equines coat. It is always recommended to read and do research on what is within the product.

It is critical when reading the ingredients of the fly sprays. If your equine has an allergic reaction while using the fly spray, it will be a sign telling you "I'm allergic to an ingredient in it." Things to watch for if your equine is having an allergic reaction are rashes, hives, or discomfort. With seeing the signs, discontinue that fly spray and find a new one with different ingredients.

A Few Store-Bought Label Ingredients

  • Prallethrin (a member of cyclopropanes and a terminal acetylenic compound)

  • Permethrin (a synthetic insecticide of the pyrethroid class)

  • Pyrethrins ( a group of insecticidal compounds in pyrethrum flowers)

  • Piperonyl Butoxide (a waxy white solid organic compound as a synergist component of pesticide)

  • Other Ingredients

A Few Home-Made Ingredients

  • White Vinegar

  • Eucalyptus Oil

  • Essential Oils (peppermint, lavender, lemongrass)

  • Baby Oil

  • Water

Many different fly sprays can be either bought or made, it comes down to what is best for you and your equine.

There are also products you can buy such as a fly mask or flysheet. There are all different sizes, styles, and designs available.

Summer is here to enjoy hanging outside but the pesky bugs think so as well. Enjoy all that summer offers and leave the pesky bugs behind. Thanks for joining the Equidae Family!
