What types of fencing to choose from?

Now it is time to choose the style and material for your fence. It is common to have multiple types of fencing throughout the property. Planning on the needs and use of the fencing may be coherent to have more than three different fencing types.

Types of Fencing

- Wire/Electric

  • Smooth Wire is economical for large pastures when properly installed and maintained.

  • Mesh Fencing is a criss-cross of wires fastened together. There are two different styles of wire gauges and can be either welded or woven wire.

  • V-Mesh is horizontal wires laced with different gauges of wires.

  • High-Tensile Wire is held between posts that are commonly harder to see if nothing is tied to it, like a ribbon.

  • High-Tension Wire-Rail is higher in price but is the most attractive of fencing. From a distance, it looks like a wooden board but is multiple wires laced within the plastic.

- Wire Gauges

  • 9 gauge (larger circumference)

  • 10 gauge

  • 11 gauge

  • 12.5 gauge (common sized circumference used)

  • 14 gauge

  • 14.5 gauge

  • 16 gauge

  • 17 gauge

  • 18 gauge

  • 20 gauge (smaller circumference)

- Wood

  • Wood Preservatives assist with a special anti-chew product that can be painted or sprayed, also, the wood that will go into the ground will need regular maintaining.

  • Buck Fencing is great for irregular or rocky terrain. It has a rustic wood look and is best for large mountain pastures.

- Steel Pipe

  • Tubular Steel is commonly seen in the portable horse panels with, more often than not, low maintenance.

- PVC

  • Polyvinyl Chloride is found in multiple styles and easy to see, but can be costly if the equine tend to run into the fencing.

Finding safe, sturdy, low maintenance, visible, attractive, and affordable fencing can be overwhelming when planning an equine facility or space. Thank you for joining the Equidae Family and Benner Stride is here to help!
